Paneer Dalna

Ingredients

  • 350 grams cottage cheese (paneer), cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2-3 tablespoons mustard oil        
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 3-4 cloves
  • 4-5 green cardamoms
  • 1 inch cinnamon 
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 2-3 green chillies, diagonally sliced
  • 2-3 dried red chillies, broken
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin powder
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala powder
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • ½ cup yogurt
  • ½ cup boiled green peas
  • Steamed rice for serving

Method

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a shallow non-stick pan, add cottage cheese pieces and shallow-fry on medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook on other side for 2-3 minutes more.
  2. Heat mustard oil in another non-stick pan, add cumin seeds and once they start to change colour, add cloves, green cardamoms, cinnamon and bay leaves, mix and sauté till fragrant.
  3. Add potatoes, mix and sauté till golden brown.
  4. Add green chillies, dried red chillies and ginger paste, mix and sauté for 30 seconds.
    Mix turmeric powder, cumin powder, garam masala powder and red chilli powder in a bowl. Add ¼ cup hot water and mix well.
  5. Add this paste to the potatoes and mix well. Add yogurt and mix well.
  6. Add 1 cup hot water and mix well. Add salt and mix well. Cover and cook on medium heat for 6-8 minutes.
  7. Add green peas and cottage cheese pieces, mix with light hands and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot with steamed rice.
