Bhatwani Dal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup soya beans
  • 2 tablespoons black sesame seeds
  • 2-3 tablespoons mustard oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 10-15 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 2-3 green chillies, chopped
  • 2-3 dried red chillies  
  • 1 large tomato, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1½ teaspoons coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
  • Steamed rice for serving

Method

  1. Heat a non-stick pan, add soya beans and dry roast on a medium heat for 4-5 minutes.
  2. Add black sesame seeds and roast for 1 minute. Take the pan off the heat and allow to cool.
  3. Transfer into a grinder jar and grind to coarse powder.
  4. Heat mustard oil in a non-stick pan, add cumin seeds and once they start to change colour, add asafoetida and mix well.
  5. Add garlic, mix and sauté for 1 minute. Add onions, mix and sauté till golden brown.
  6. Add green chillies and dried red chillies, mix and sauté for 30 seconds. Add tomato, mix and sauté till it turns pulpy.
  7. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder and red chilli powder and mix well.
  8. Add ground powder and mix well. Add 3-4 cups hot water and mix well.
  9. Once the mixture comes to a boil, cover and cook on low heat for 10-15 minutes.
  10. Add coriander leaves and mix well. 
  11. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot with steamed rice.
