Ingredients
- Badi
- 1½ cups soaked and drained split skinless green gram (dhuli moong dal)
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- Oil to grease
- Salan
- 3 tablespoons mustard oil
- 1½ teaspoons cumin seeds
- 1½ cups onion paste
- 1½ tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
- ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1½ teaspoons red chilli powder
- 1 tablespoon coriander powder
- 1½ teaspoons cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
- Salt to taste
- 2-3 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves + for garnish
- Steamed rice for serving
Method
- Transfer split green gram into a grinder jar, add ½ cup water and grind to fine mixture.
- Transfer the mixture into a bowl, add salt, coriander leaves and onion and mix well.
- Heat sufficient water in a steamer.
- Grease a thali with some oil and drop small portions of the ground mixture on it keeping some distance between each.
- Place the thali in the steamer and steam for 10-15 minutes.
- Meanwhile heat mustard oil in a kadai till it begins to smoke. Cool slightly, add cumin seeds and once they start to change colour, add onion paste, mix and saute till golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste, mix, and sauté for 1 minute.
- Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and garam masala powder and mix well.
- Add 3 cups water and mix well. Once the mixture comes to a boil, add salt and mix well. Lower the heat, cover and cook for 4-5 minutes.
- Add steamed badi and mix with a light hand. Cook on medium heat for 4-5 minutes.
- Add coriander leaves and mix well.
- Transfer into a serving bowl, sprinkle coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
