Ingredients list for Doodhi Chana ni Dal - SK Khazana

  • 1 medium Bottle gourd (lauki/doodhi) peeled and cut into medium cubes
  • 1/2 cup Split Bengal gram (chana dal) soaked for 30 minutes
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 2-3 Green chillies finely chopped
  • 10-12 Curry leaves
  • 1 large Tomato finely chopped
  • 3/4 cup Fresh tomato puree
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon Coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kitchen king masala
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Fresh coriander leaves
  • Fresh coriander sprigs


  1. Put chana dal and bottle gourd into a pressure cooker, add 1½ cups water, cover the cooker and cook under pressure till 3-4 whistles are released.
  2. Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add asafoetida green chillies and curry leaves, mix well and saute for 1 minute. Add tomato and mix well. Add tomato puree and mix well. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, Kitchen King masala and salt and mix well. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.
  3. Add Bengal gram and bottle gourd and mix well. Add coriander leaves and mix well. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes
  4. Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander sprigs and serve hot.
