Kathal Dabeli

Dabeli is a popular snack which is believed to have originated in Gujarat. It is a pav usually stuffed with a spicy potato mixture but here we have brought you dabeli with a twist which is something you will definitely love.

Ingredients

  • 200 grams boiled raw jackfruit (kathal)
  • 8 dabeli pavs, diagonally slit without cutting through
  • 2 tablespoons butter + for toasting
  • 2 tablespoons red chilli-garlic chutney + for applying
  • ¼ cup dabeli masala
  • 2 tablespoons date and tamarind chutney + for applying
  • Salt to taste
  • 1½ tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves + for sprinkling
  • 4-5 black grapes, vertically halved
  • 4-5 green grapes, vertically halved
  • 2 tablespoons fresh pomegranate pearls 
  • Masala peanut for sprinkling + to serve
  • 2 tablespoons grated fresh coconut
  • Sev as required
  • Chopped onion to serve

Method

  1. Put the boiled raw jackfruit in a grinder jar and grind to a fine paste. 
  2. Heat butter in a non-stick pan, add red chilli-garlic chutney and mix well. Saute till the fat separates. 
  3. Add dabeli masala and date and tamarind chutney and mix well. Add salt and mix till well combined.
  4. Add the ground raw jackfruit and mix well. Add coriander leaves and mix. 
  5. Transfer the mixture into a thali and spread it evenly. 
  6. Sprinkle black grapes, green grapes, fresh pomegranate pearls, masala peanuts, coriander leaves and grated fresh coconut. 
  7. To make a dabeli¸ apply some date and tamarind chutney and red chilli-garlic chutney on the inner side of a pav. Generously stuff with a portion of the prepared raw jackfruit mixture. 
  8. Heat some butter in a non-stick tawa. Place the dabelis on it and toast for 1-2 minutes on both sides. Coat the open sides with sev. Make more dabelis in the same way.
  9. Serve immediately with onion and masala peanuts.
