Available in various types, shapes and sizes, these edible fungi (purely vegetarian!) are a great way to glam-up your dishes. Talking about the types, there are – button, enoki, morel, oyster, shiitake, porcini, chanterelle and portabella. Buy the ones with a firm texture and even colour with tightly-closed caps. If the gills are showing, it is an indication of age and they are probably past their prime.

Ingredients for Mushroom Matar Masala Recipe

  • Button mushrooms , halved 12-16

  • Green peas (matar) , boilrf 2-3 tablespoons

  • Oil 1 tablespoon

  • Onion , finely chopped 1 large

  • Ginger-garlic paste 1 tablespoon

  • Tomato , finely chopped 1 large

  • Tomato puree 1/4 cup

  • Red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon

  • Cumin powder 1 teaspoon

  • Coriander powder 1 teaspoon

  • Yogurt 1/4 cup

  • Salt to taste

  • Garam masala powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Fresh cream 2 tablespo to garnish

  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish


Step 1

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a non-stick pan, add onion and sauté till golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste, mix and sauté till fragrant.

Step 2

Add tomato, mix and saute till the tomato turns soft and pulpy. Add tomato puree, mix and cook for a minute.

Step 3

Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder and coriander powder and mix well. Add a little water, mix well and saute for 1 minute.

Step 4

Add yogurt, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add mushrooms and salt, mix well and cook for a minute. Add some more water, mix, cover and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add green peas, mix well and cook for a few seconds.

Step 5

Add garam masala powder, mix well and cook for a minute. Add cream, mix well and cook for a few seconds.

Step 6

Transfer into a serving bowl, drizzle a little cream, garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
