Kulthacha Pithla

Ingredients

  • 1 cup roasted horse gram (kulith) flour
  • ¾ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil    
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 10-12 garlic cloves, coarsely crushed
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2-3 green chillies, coarsely crushed
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1-2 sprigs of curry leaves
  • 4-5 kokum petals
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
  • Fresh coriander sprig for garnish
  • Steamed rice to serve

Method

  1. Take horse gram flour in a large bowl, add ½ teaspoon turmeric powder, salt and 1 cup water and mix to a smooth lump free mixture.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add cumin seeds, mix and let them change colour. 
  3. Add garlic, mix and saute for 1-2 minutes. Add onion, mix and sauté till translucent.
  4. Add green chillies, red chilli powder, ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder and curry leaves, mix and saute for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Add ½ cup water, mix well and cook till the mixture comes to a boil. Add horse gram mixture, mix well and cook, stirring continuously, till the mixture comes to a boil. 
  6. Add kokum petals, adjust salt, pour 2½ cups water and mix well. Cook on medium heat for 3-4 minutes stirring continuously.
  7. Add coriander leaves and mix well. 
  8. Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander sprig and serve hot with steamed rice.
