Capsicum Thokku

Thokku is a staple side dish in most South Indian homes and can be made with different vegetables, pulses and lentils too. Thokku is almost mashed dish that can used as a side dish and enjoyed with rice or chapatti.

  • 3 medium green capsicums
  • 2-3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 teaspoons fennel seeds
  • 1 inch ginger, chopped
  • 10-12 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 2-3 green chillies, slit
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1½ teaspoons coriander powder
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons tamarind water
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander
  • Chapatti for serving


  1. Deseed and slice the capsicums.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, fennel seeds, ginger and garlic, mix well and sauté for 30 seconds.
  3. Add green chillies and onions, mix well and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add tomatoes, mix and sauté for 2-3 minutes. Add capsicums and mix well.
  5. Add red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder and mix well. Add salt and mix. Add curry leaves and mix.
  6. Add ½ cup water, mix well and cook on medium heat for 4-5 minutes.
  7. Add tamarind water and coriander leaves and mix well.
  8. Serve with chapatti.
