Ingredients
- 750 grams raw jackfruit, peeled and cut into 2 inch pieces
- 1 cup scraped fresh coconut + for garnish
- Salt to taste
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2-3 green chillies
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 tablespoon split skinless black gram (duli urad dal)
- 10-12 garlic cloves, vertically sliced
- 1 cup sliced madras onions
- 2-4 dried red chillies
- 15-20 curry leaves
- ¼ teaspoon crushed black peppercorns
Method
- Put raw jackfruit pieces in a pressure cooker, add 3 cups water, salt and turmeric powder. Cover the cooker and cook under pressure for 3-4 whistles.
- Put green chillies, cumin seeds and coconut in a mixer jar and grind to a coarse mixture.
- Open the cooker once the pressure has reduced completely. Drain the mixture and transfer the cooked raw jackfruit into another bowl and mash lightly.
- Heat coconut oil in an earthen pot, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add split skinless black gram and garlic, mix well and saute for 1-2 minutes.
- Add madras onion and mix. Add dried red chillies and curry leaves and mix well. Saute till the onions turn translucent.
- Add the mashed jackfruit and mix well. Add the ground mixture and mix well. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Adjust salt and add crushed black peppercorn and mix well. Switch the heat off, Transfer onto a serving plate, garnish with coconut and serve hot.
