Indian food is also influenced by religious and cultural choices and traditions. 
Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Dalia with Vegetables Recipe

  • Broken wheat (dalia/lapsi) soaked 1½ cups

  • Carrots grated 1 small

  • Green capsicum chopped 1 small

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Mustard seeds ¼ teaspoon

  • Asafoetida a pinch

  • Green chillies chopped 2

  • Curry leaves 15-20

  • Dried red chillies broken into large bits 2

  • Onion finely chopped 1 small

  • Turmeric powder ¼ teaspoon

  • Roasted peanuts crushed ¼ cup

  • Salt to taste

  • Lemon juice 2 tablespoons

Method

Step 1

Heat the oil in a non-stick kadai. Add the mustard seeds, asafoetida, green chillies, curry leaves and red chillies. When the seeds begin to splutter, add the onion and sauté till translucent.

Step 2

Add the carrot and capsicum and sauté for four to five minutes. Add the broken wheat, turmeric powder, roasted peanuts and salt and mix well.

Step 3

Add three cups of water, mix, cover and cook till the broken wheat softens.

Step 4

Add lemon juice and mix well.

Step 5

Serve hot.
