Indian cuisine comprises of a number of regional cuisines.  The diversity in soil type, climate, culture, ethnic group and occupations, these cuisines differ from each other mainly due to the use of locally available spices, herbs, vegetables and fruits. Indian food is also influenced by religious and cultural choices and traditions. 
Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Aloo Prawn Masala Recipe

  • Small potatoes cut into 1 cm cubes 3

  • Medium prawns shelled and deveined 16-20

  • Salt to taste

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Oil 1 tablespoon

  • Garlic chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Medium onions chopped 2

  • Medium tomato chopped 1

  • Green chillies slit 2

  • Red chilli powder 1/2 tablespoon

  • Cumin powder 2 teaspoons

  • Coriander powder 1 teaspoon

  • Kokum petals 5-6

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped to garnish


Step 1

Take prawns in a bowl, add salt and ¼ tsp turmeric powder, mix well and set aside to marinate for 10 minutes.

Step 2

Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add onions, mix and saute till golden brown in colour.

Step 3

Add potatoes, mix and sauté for a minute. Add tomatoes, green chillies and salt, mix and cook till soft.

Step 4

Add the red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, remaining turmeric powder and kokum and mix well. Add ½ cup of water, mix well and cook till the potatoes are almost done.

Step 5

Add marinated prawns, mix and cook till prawns are done. Add some coriander leaves and mix well.

Step 6

Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
