Masoori Chi Godi Shaak

Whole red lentils (masoor dal) cooked in freshly ground paste with the flavour of fresh grated coconut. This is a Sanjeev Kapoor exclusive recipe.

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup whole red lentils, soaked
  • 1/2 cup scraped fresh coconut
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon red chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon tamarind pulp
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped garlic 
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves 

Method

  1. Drain and put the lentils in a deep non-stick pan, add onion and sufficient water, cover and cook for five to ten minutes.
  2. Grind together coconut and cumin seeds, with sufficient water, to a smooth paste.
  3. Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, garam masala powder and salt to the pan and mix well.
  4. Add little more water, mix, cover and cook for two minutes. Add tamarind pulp and mix well.
  5. Add ground paste, mix well and simmer for two minutes.
  6. Heat oil in a small non-stick pan, add garlic and sauté till it turns golden.
  7. Add sautéed garlic to the lentil mixture and cover the pan.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
