This recipe is a perfect idea if you want to have a power breakfast or a big snack. Moong dal cheelas filled with a pickle spiced chunky paneer, onion and capsicum mixture. It is also really simple to make, so you don’t have to toil away in the kitchen.

A favourite with the vegetarians, paneer made from milk is quite common, especially paneer recipes are quite popular in the Indian subcontinent. You can make it fresh, chhena – an another version or just use the ones that are readily available in the market to prepare everything from simple snacks, curries, sabzis, mithais, desserts and the likes. An ingredient that can be relished in the raw form too – try serving it as a starter just sprinkled with a little chaat masala, black salt and chilli powder!

Ingredients for Achari Paneer Cheela Recipe

  • Paneer (cottage cheese) cut into cubes 150 grams

  • Whole green grams (sabut moong) soaked 1½ cups

  • Pickle masala 2-3 tablespoons

  • Salt to taste

  • Crushed black peppercorns to taste

  • Oil 1 tablespoon

  • Garlic chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Ginger finely chopped 1 inch

  • Onions sliced 2 medium

  • Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon

  • Red chilli flakes ½ teaspoon

  • Green capsicum chopped 1 medium

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Cheela -

  • Ginger roughly chopped 1 inch

  • Green chillies roughly chopped 2

  • Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder ¼ teaspoon

  • Salt to taste

  • Oil as required


Step 1

To make achari paneer, take cottage cheese cubes in a bowl. Add salt, crushed peppercorns and pickle masala and mix well.

Step 2

Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add the garlic and ginger and sauté for thirty seconds. Add the onions and sauté till golden.

Step 3

Add the marinated cottage cheese cubes, mix and cook till half done. Add the chilli powder and mix.

Step 4

Add chilli flakes and green capsicum, mix and cook for one to two minutes.Add the coriander leaves and mix. Transfer the achari paneer in a bowl and cool.

Step 5

To make the cheela, combine the green gram, ginger, green chillies, chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt in a grinder jar. Grind into a coarse paste using sufficient water. Transfer into a bowl.

Step 6

Heat a non-stick tawa. Pour a ladle full of the batter and spread evenly into a round cheela. Drizzle little oil around the sides and cook on low heat till both sides are evenly done.

Step 7

Remove from the tawa, place on a plate with the bottom side facing down. Place a spoonful of the achari paneer in the centre and fold tightly. Cut into pieces.

Step 8

Serve hot.
