Ingredients
- 1 cup split red lentils (masoor dal), soaked for 20 minutes and drained
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- Salt to taste
- ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 tablespoons mustard oil
- ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
- 3 dried red chillies
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
- Steamed rice for serving
Method
- Put split red lentils into a pressure cooker, add 3 cups of water, salt, turmeric powder and tomato, cover the cooker with its lid and cook under pressure for 2 whistles. Open the lid once the pressure settles completely.
- Heat mustard oil in a deep pan till it begins to smoke. Cool slightly, add cumin seeds and once they change colour, add dried red chillies and sauté for a few seconds.
- Add cooked dal, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes
- Add coriander leaves and mix well.
- Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot with steamed rice.
