Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups split Bengal gram (chana dal) , soaked for 3-4 hours and drained
- 2 medium onions
- 2 teaspoons cumin seeds
- 1 green chilli
- 2-3 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 3/4 teaspoon red chilli powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
Method
- Roughly chop 1 onion and finely chop the other.
- Transfer the split Bengal gram into a blender jar. Add roughly chopped onion, half the cumin seeds, green chilli and ¼ cup water and grind coarsely.
- Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add mustard seeds and once they start to splutter, add the remaining cumin seeds and asafoetida and mix.
- Add finely chopped onion and sauté till golden brown. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt and mix well.
- Add the ground mixture and mix well. Cover and cook, on low heat, for 12-15 minutes or till the gram is fully cooked. Make sure you mix at regular intervals.
- Sprinkle coriander leaves and mix well. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot.
