Ingredients
- 1½ cups oats
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- 2 green chillies, roughly chopped
- 3-4 fresh coriander sprigs, chopped
- 1½ tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon split skinless black gram (dhuli urad dal)
- ¼ teaspoon asafoetida
- Salt to taste
- ¼ cup frozen green peas
- A pinch of sugar
- Fresh coriander sprig for garnishing
- Lemon wedges for garnishing
- Green coconut chutney for serving
Method
- Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add mustard seeds and let it splutter. Add split skinless black gram and sauté on medium heat for 30 seconds.
- Reduce heat, add asafeotida, green chillies and curry leaves and let the curry leaves crackle.
- Add onion and mix. Add salt, mix, cover and cook for 2 minutes. Add tomato, green peas and sugar, mix, cover and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Add oats and coriander leaves and mix. Add 2½ cups water, mix, cover and cook on low heat for 4-5 minutes.
- Place a serving bowl on one side of a serving platter. Put oats upma in the bowl and garnish with coriander sprig and lemon wedges.
- Serve hot with green coconut chutney.
