Ingredients 

  • 1½ cups oats 
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 2 green chillies, roughly chopped
  • 3-4 fresh coriander sprigs, chopped
  • 1½ tablespoons oil 
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 
  • 1 teaspoon split skinless black gram (dhuli urad dal)
  • ¼ teaspoon asafoetida
  • Salt to taste 
  • ¼ cup frozen green peas
  • A pinch of sugar
  • Fresh coriander sprig for garnishing
  • Lemon wedges for garnishing
  • Green coconut chutney for serving 

Method

  1. Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add mustard seeds and let it splutter. Add split skinless black gram and sauté on medium heat for 30 seconds. 
  2. Reduce heat, add asafeotida, green chillies and curry leaves and let the curry leaves crackle. 
  3. Add onion and mix. Add salt, mix, cover and cook for 2 minutes. Add tomato, green peas and sugar, mix, cover and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add oats and coriander leaves and mix. Add 2½ cups water, mix, cover and cook on low heat for 4-5 minutes. 
  5. Place a serving bowl on one side of a serving platter. Put oats upma in the bowl and garnish with coriander sprig and lemon wedges.
  6. Serve hot with green coconut chutney.
