Ingredients list for Gogroon Thoom

  • 4 medium Turnips (shalgam/gogroon) peeled
  • 3 tablespoons Crushed garlic (thoom)
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 2 medium Onions finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoons Ginger finely chopped
  • 2 Green chillies
  • 2 medium Tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Garam masala powder
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh coriander leaves finely chopped


  1. Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Cut turnips into big cubes.
  2. Add onions to the cooker and sauté till lightly browned. Add ginger and garlic and sauté for half a minute.
  3. Slit green chillies without cutting through and add to the cooker. Add tomatoes and saute till tomatoes become soft. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder and red chilli powder and mix. Add turnip cubes and salt and mix well. Add sugar and mix well. Add 2 cups water and garam masala powder and mix well.
  4. Cover the cooker with the lid and cook under pressure till pressure is released 3 times (3 whistles).
  5. Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander leaves and serve immediately.
