Available in various types, shapes and sizes, these edible fungi (purely vegetarian!) are a great way to glam-up your dishes. Talking about the types, there are – button, enoki, morel, oyster, shiitake, porcini, chanterelle and portabella. Buy the ones with a firm texture and even colour with tightly-closed caps. If the gills are showing, it is an indication of age and they are probably past their prime.

Ingredients for Mushroom Do Pyaza Goan Style Recipe

  • Button mushrooms halved 200 grams

  • Onion chopped 1 medium

  • Onion diced and layers separated 1 medium

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Garlic cloves chopped 3-4

  • Tomatoes chopped 2 small

  • Garam masala powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon

  • Cumin-coriander powder 1 teaspoon

  • Fresh cream 1 1/2 tablespoons

  • Green chillies 2 slit for garnish

  • Fresh coriander sprigs for garnish


Step 1

Heat oil in a non-stick pan.

Step 2

Grind half chopped onion and garlicto a fine paste in a mixer with a little water if required.

Step 3

Add this paste to the pan and sauté for a minute. Add the tomatoes and cook till tomatoes are soft.

Step 4

Add garam masala powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and cumin-coriander powder and mix well. Cook on high heat.

Step 5

Add salt and mix. Add mushrooms and diced onion and mix well. Sprinkle a little water, cover and cook for two to three minutes.

Step 6

Add cream, mix well and remove from heat.

Step 7

Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with slit green chillies and fresh coriander sprigs. Serve hot.
