Masoor Dal Kanda

Ingredients
· 2 cups soaked and drained split red lentils (masoor dal)
· 2 medium onions (kanda)
· 2 tbsps oil
· 1 tsp mustard seeds
· 1 tsp cumin seeds
· A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
· 2 green chillies, chopped
· A sprig of curry leaves
· Salt to taste
· 1 medium tomato, chopped
· ½ tsp turmeric powder
· 1 tsp red chilli powder
· ½ tsp garam masala powder
· 2 tsps kanda lasun masala
· 2 tbsps chopped fresh coriander leaves
· Fresh coriander sprig
· Rice bhakri for serving
Method
1. Chop onions finely.
2. Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds and once they begin to splutter, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, green chillies, curry leaves, onions and salt, mix and sauté for 2 minutes.
3. Add ginger-garlic paste, mix well and sauté till onions turn golden brown.
4. Add tomato, mix well and saute for 3-4 minutes or till oil separates.
5. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and garam masala powder and mix well.
6. Add masoor dal and mix well. Add1½ cups water and mix. Cover with a lid and cook on low heat for 10-15 minutes.
7. Add kanda lasun masala, mix and cook for 2 minutes. Add coriander leaves and mix well.
8. Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander sprig and serve hot with rice bhakri.
