Ingredients list for Gavthi Sukha Chicken

  • 750 grams Country chicken , cut into 2 inch pieces on the bone
  • 1 large Onion
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 inch Ginger , cut into thin strips
  • Masala
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Coriander seeds
  • 10-15 Black peppercorns
  • 1 inch Cinnamon
  • 6-8 Cloves
  • 1 inch Ginger
  • 4-5 cloves Garlic
  • 1/2 cup Dried coconut slices , fried
  • 2-3 Green chillies


  1. Finely slice onion. Heat oil in a deep non-stick pan, add ¾ of the sliced onion and chicken, mix well and sauté on high heat for 1 minute, cover and cook for 4-5 minutes.
  2. Add turmeric powder, mix well and cover and cook on medium heat for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Meanwhile to make the masala, heat oil in a shallow non-stick pan, add remaining onion, coriander seeds, black peppercorns, cinnamon and cloves, mix and sauté till fragrant and golden. Take the pan off the heat.
  4. Finely slice ginger and put into a bender jar, add garlic cloves, dried coconut slices, broken green chillies, onion-spice mixture and sufficient water and blend into a fine paste.
  5. Add this paste to the chicken mixture and mix well. Adjust the salt and mix well. Cover and cook till the chicken is cooked completely.
  6. Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with ginger strips and serve hot.
