Ingredients list for Chatpata Karela

  • 2 Bitter Gourd
  • 6-8 piece Dried Indian Gooseberry
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • to deep fry Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garam masala powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dried mango powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chaat masala
  • 2 tablespoons Gram flour (besan)
  • 2 tablespoons Rice flour
  • to taste Salt


  1. Finely slice the bitter gourds into roundels and put into a bowl.
  2. Add salt and turmeric powder, mix and keep aside for 4-5 minutes.
  3. Heat sufficient oil in a kadai. Wash the marinated karela thoroughly with water, squeeze out all the water and put into another bowl.
  4. Add red chilli powder, garam masala powder, salt, amchur and ¼ tsp chaat masala and mix well.
  5. Add gram flour and rice flour and mix well. Deep fry bitter gourd slices in the hot oil till crisp.
  6. Finely slice amla pieces. Drain the fried bitter gourd slices on absorbent paper.
  7. Add remaining chaat masala and amla and mix well. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve immediately.
