Ingredients list for Brown Stew

  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 medium Potatoes peeled and cut into cubes
  • 3 medium Onions sliced
  • 1 medium Cinnamon
  • 4-5 Cloves
  • 8-10 Black peppercorns
  • 12-15 Cauliflower florets
  • 1 medium Carrot peeled and cut into cubes
  • 1 cup French beans long pieces
  • 1 cup Green peas
  • 10-12 Button onions
  • 2 tablespoons Refined flour (maida)
  • to taste Salt
  • 2 medium Tomatoes finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce


  1. Heat butter in a deep non-stick pan. Add onions and sauté till well-browned.
  2. Add cinnamon, cloves and peppercorns and mix well. Add potatoes, cauliflower, carrot, beans and green peas. Mix well and cook on high heat for 1 minute.
  3. Add button onions, mix again and add 3 cups water. Mix, cover and cook on high heat till it comes to a boil.
  4. Remove cover, mix well, cover and simmer for 6-8 minutes or till vegetables are tender.
  5. Mix refined flour with ½ cup water well ensuring that there are no lumps. Add this to the pan and mix. Add 1½ cups water and mix again.
  6. Add salt, tomatoes and mix well. Add Worcestershire sauce and mix well. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Serve hot.
