Ingredients for BLOOMING ONIONS - skk Recipe

  • Medium onions 4-8

  • Refined flour 1 cup

  • Salt to taste

  • Dried thyme 1 teaspoon

  • Onion powder 1 teaspoon

  • Dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon

  • Garlic powder 1 teaspoon

  • Black peppercorns crushed to taste

  • Paprika 1 tablespoon

  • Red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Milk 1/2 cup

  • Eggs 2

  • Malt vinegar 2 tablespoons

  • Oil to deep fry

  • Green mayonnaise to serve

  • Tomato ketchup to serve


Step 1

Mix together flour, salt, dried thyme, onion powder, dried oregano, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon crushed black peppercorns, paprika and red chilli powder in a bowl.

Step 2

Whisk together milk, egg, vinegar, a little crushed black peppercorns and salt in another bowl.

Step 3

Make 8 slits on the onions without cutting through. Separate the layers to create flowers.

Step 4

Dust the onion flowers with the flour mixture taking care that the flour mixture goes into the slits too. Dip in the milk-egg mixture and dust them with the flour mixture once again. Refrigerate for 10-15 minutes.

Step 5

Heat sufficient oil in a kadai. Gently slide the onions into hot oil and deep-fry till golden brown and crisp. Drain on absorbent paper.

Step 6

Arrange them on a serving plate and serve hot with green mayonnaise and tomato ketchup.
