Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Onion Tomato Chutney Recipe

  • Onion chopped 1 medium

  • Tomatoes chopped 4 medium

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Split black gram skinless (dhuli urad dal) 1 teaspoon

  • Dried red chillies broken 2

  • Salt to taste

  • Asafoetida 1/4 teaspoon

  • Vinegar 4 teaspoons

  • Tamarind pulp 1 tablespoon

  • Brown sugar 100 grams

Method

Step 1

Heat oil in a non stick pan, add mustard seeds and when they splutter add urad dal, red chillies and sauté till fragrant.

Step 2

Add onions and sauté till they soften. Add tomatoes and salt and mix well. Cover and cook.Add asfoetida, vinegar, tamarind pulp and mix well.

Step 3

Cover and continue to cook.Add brown sugar and mix till it blends completely with the tomatoes. Serve hot or cold.
