Indian cuisine comprises of a number of regional cuisines.  The diversity in soil type, climate, culture, ethnic group and occupations, these cuisines differ from each other mainly due to the use of locally available spices, herbs, vegetables and fruits. Indian food is also influenced by religious and cultural choices and traditions. 
Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Chana Dal - SK Khazana Recipe

  • Spllit Bengal gram (chana dal) soaked for 1 hour 2 cups

  • Medium tomatoes diced 3-4

  • Garlic cloves 6-7

  • Ginger roughly chopped 2 inches

  • Green chillies 2

  • Salt to taste

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Medium onions finely chopped 2

  • Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon

  • Coriander powder 1 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1/4 teaspoon

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 1 tablespo to garnish


Step 1

Put tomatoes in a blender jar. Roughly chop garlic and add to the blender jar along with ginger. Roughly chop green chillies and add to the blender jar along with salt and blend to a coarse paste.

Step 2

Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add onions and sauté till golden brown. Add chana dal and mix well. Add salt and mix. Add turmeric powder, mix well and saute for 1 minute.

Step 3

Add the tomato paste. Rinse the blender jar with a little water and add to the cooker.

Step 4

Add coriander powder and red chilli powder and mix well. Add 2 cups water and mix.

Step 5

Place the lid on the cooker and cook under pressure till 3-4 whistles are released. Reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes. Open the lid when the pressure is completely reduced.

Step 6

Add coriander leaves and mix well.

Step 7

Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
