It is a fact that Dals and Kadhis are comfort foods and they are a good source of calcium, phosphorus, vitamins B and iron. Dals, especially are a major source of dietary fibre and proteins. Kadhis are a blend of yogurt and herbs which assist in efficient digestion. Every region has its locally grown herbs and spices as the key ingredients, thus a variety of kadhis are relished across the length and breadth of Indian subcontinent.

Ingredients for Kadla Recipe

  • Black bengal gram soaked overnight 1 1/2 cups

  • Fresh coconut

  • Onions 2 large

  • Coconut scraped 1/2 cup

  • Red chilli powder 2 tablespoons

  • Coconut oil 1 tablespoon

  • Curry leaves 15

  • Tomato chopped 1 large

  • Salt to taste

  • Coriander powder 2 tablespoons


Step 1

Drain the chana and pressure-cook with four cups of water till soft. Drain and reserve the cooking liquor.

Step 2

Chop the onions in the chopper. Roast the coconut in a non-stick pan. Add red chilli powder and roast till golden. Cool and grind to a paste with a little water.

Step 3

Heat coconut oil in another non stick pan. Add curry leaves and onions and sauté for two minutes. Add tomato and continue to sauté. Add the coconut paste and the boiled chana. Add the cooking liquor, salt, coriander powder and mix. Cover and simmer on med
