  • 500 grams bottle gourd (lauki) 
  • ¼ cup flax seeds (alsi)
  • 2-3 tablespoons mustard oil
  • ¼ teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2-3 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
  • ½ lemon
  • Fresh coriander sprig for garnish
  • Rotis for serving


  1. Peel bottle gourd and cut into 1 inch cubes. 
  2. Dry roast flax seeds in a non-stick pan, till they pop, transfer onto a plate and allow to cool.
  3. Transfer roasted flax seeds in mortar and finely pound it with a pestle.
  4. Heat mustard oil in a kadai till it smokes, reduce heat, add asafoetida and bottle gourd and sauté on high heat for 2-3 minutes. Add salt and turmeric powder and mix well. Cover and cook for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Add 2-3 tablespoons of powdered flax seeds and coriander leaves and mix well.
  6. Switch off heat, squeeze the juice of lemon and add to the mixture and mix well.
  7. Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander sprig and serve hot with rotis.
