Why is it that when you are stuck at “what should we cook today” the answer is always “make some aloo!” Potatoes are like this…extremely popular and have multipurpose usage.

And did you always think that eating a potato will make you fat?
Well, don’t – it is a surprising source of vitamin C and provides useful amounts of starch, thiamine and niacin and around a hundred grams will provide about eighty calories.

Ingredients for Batata Kaapa Recipe

  • Potatoes peeled 3-4 large

  • Semolina

  • Salt to taste

  • Red chilli powder 2 teaspoons

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Sambhar powder 1 tablespoon

  • Lemon juice 1 tablespoon

  • Semolina (suji/rawa) 1/2 cup

  • Rice flour 1/2 cup

  • Oil for shallow frying


Step 1

Cut potatoes into half centimeter thick round slices and place them in a bowl. Add salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, sambhar powder and lemon juice, mix well and set aside.

Step 2

Mix semolina and rice flour and spread on a plate.

Step 3

Heat oil in a non-stick pan.

Step 4

Roll potato slices in semolina-rice flour mixture and place them on the pan. Shallow-fry, turning sides, till potatoes are cooked and evenly done from both sides. Drain on absorbent paper.

Step 5

Serve hot.
