The cuisine of The United States is a rich amalgamation of peoples, religions and cultures thanks to the immigrants from different parts of the world.  They brought with them their local ingredients as well as cooking styles with them.  Yet amidst all these varieties Chinese and Italian cuisines dominate.  
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Americans developed a number of new foods.  What characterised the American cuisine is the adaptation of a fusion of multiple ethnic cooking styles. During this period food production and presentation became more industrialised.

Ingredients for Prawn Cocktail Recipe

  • Prawns shelled and deveined 16

  • Vinegar 1 teaspoon

  • Salt to taste

  • Lettuce 1 bunch

  • Eggs boiled and quartered 2

  • Cocktail sauce

  • Mayonnaise 3 tablespoons

  • Tomato ketchup 2 teaspoons

  • Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon

  • Tabasco sauce 1 teaspoon

  • Cream 1 teaspoon

  • Brandy 1 tablespoon

  • White pepper powder 1/4 teaspoon

Method

Step 1

Heat sufficient water in a pan, add vinegar and salt. Add prawns and cook on medium heat for two minutes. Remove and cool. Reserving four whole prawns for garnish, cut the remaining into half inch sized pieces.

Step 2

Wash lettuce leaves, shred them, reserving lettuce hearts (inner most small leaves) for the garnish. Prepare cocktail sauce by mixing mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, cream and brandy.

Step 3

Add salt if required and white pepper powder. Chill the wine glasses in refrigerator in which prawns are to be served. Line these glasses with shredded lettuce. Mix in the cocktail sauce with the poached prawns.

Step 4

Place this mixture in the prepared glasses and garnish it with quarters of hard boiled egg, lettuce heart and place the whole prawn on the rim of the glass. Serve absolutely chilled.
