Ingredients list for Podalanga Masala

  • 1 Snake gourd (padwal)
  • 1/4 cup Scraped coconut
  • 2 Dried red chillies
  • 2 tablespoons Fennel seeds (saunf)
  • to taste Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 12-14 Curry leaves
  • 1/2 cup Split Bengal gram (chana dal) soaked and boiled

  1. Slit the snake gourd vertically, remove seeds and cut into thin slices.
  2. Grind fennel seeds, red chillies, coconut and salt with a little water.
  3. Heat oil in a non stick pan. Add mustard seeds, and when they splutter, add curry leaves and mix well.
  4. Add snake gourd and mix well.
  5. Add the ground masala and little water and mix well.
  6. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes, on a low heat.Add chana dal and salt and mix well.
  7. Cover again and cook for 2-3 minutes. Serve hot.
