How to make Palakwali Dal -

A tasty and spicy combination of spinach and moong dal. Healthy yellow lentils prepared with fresh spinach leaves and spices makes a delicious combination of protein rich assorted lentils (dals), fiber rich spinach (palak) and magical ghee tempered spices. Its nice green color is as tempting as it can get and the combination of chopped and crushed spinach gives it a taste. Serve it with steamed rice or roti.

Treasure house of vitamins and minerals, spinach must be included in the week's menu. The usage can be varied: chopped spinach leaves cooked with potatoes is a semi-wet vegetable with rotis, a few spinach leaves thrown in with mixed vegetables and turned into a soup is lovely on a cold winter night, chopped and blanched spinach makes a different sort of raita, spinach puree can be used in cutlets or kababs, the list goes on.

Ingredients for Palakwali Dal Recipe

  • Spinach roughly shredded 15-20

  • Split green gram ¾ cup

  • Salt to taste

  • Turmeric powder 1 teaspoon

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Asafoetida a pinch

  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Onions finely chopped 2 medium

  • Green chillies seeded and chopped finely 2

  • Red chillies 2

  • Ginger chopped 1 inch piece

  • Garlic chopped 6-8 cloves

  • Lemon juice 1 teaspoon

Method

Step 1

Boil moong dal with salt and turmeric powder in two cups of water.

Step 2

Heat oil in a kadai. Add asafoetida and cumin seeds. When cumin seeds start to change colour, add onions and green chillies. Sauté till onions are soft and translucent.

Step 3

Add ginger and garlic and saute for half a minute. Add dal and bring to a boil and add spinach and lemon juice. Simmer for two minutes.

Step 4

Serve hot.
