The Maharashtrian hospitality is legendary. The cuisine has subtle variety and strong flavours and varies from region to region. In ancient times in the more affluent homes, feasts often started at mid-day and ended when the sun set! The presentation of food was alluring with a practice to sing sacred verses to dedicate the meal to God.
Maharashtrian cuisine covers a wide range from being extremely mild to very spicy dishes. Wheat, rice, jowar, vegetables, lentils and fruit form important components of Maharashtrian diet.

Ingredients for Oats Upma Recipe

  • Oats 1 cup

  • Oil 2 tablespoons

  • Black gram split (urad dal dhuli) 1 teaspoon

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Ginger chopped 1 inch piece

  • Green chillies chopped 2

  • Curry leaves 8-10

  • Onion chopped 1 medium

  • French beans chopped 5-6

  • Carrot chopped 1 medium

  • Green peas ¼ cup

  • Salt to taste

  • Milk ½ cup

Method

Step 1

Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add urad dal and sauté till they turn golden brown. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

Step 2

Add ginger, green chillies, curry leaves and onion and saute till onions turn light brown.

Step 3

Add beans, carrot and green peas and mix well. Add salt and mix well. Cook on low heat till vegetables till cooked.

Step 4

Add oats and mix well. Add milk and cover and cook for two minutes.

Step 5

Serve hot.
