To mull something means to heat, sweeten and flavor a beverage, such as wine or cider with spices. Mulled wine is usually served while hot, making it a perfect drink for the holidays. Its origins can be traced back to the Roman empire.

  • 375 milliliter red wine
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 orange
  • 12-15 black peppercorns
  • 3-4 cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 inch cinnamon stick
  • A small piece of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar


  1. Peel the lemon and thickly slice it along with the orange. 
  2. Heat wine in a non-stick pan, add black peppercorns, cloves, star anise, cinnamon, orange slices and lemon slices and mix. Grate the nutmeg into it and add brown sugar and mix well. Cook till the mixture comes to a boil and continue to cook for 4-5 minutes. 
  3. Strain the drink into individual serving glasses and serve warm.
