Palakwali Dal

A tasty and spicy combination of spinach and moong dal. Healthy yellow lentils prepared with fresh spinach leaves and spices makes a delicious combination of protein rich assorted lentils (dals), fiber rich spinach (palak) and magical ghee tempered spices. Its nice green color is as tempting as it can get and the combination of chopped and crushed spinach gives it a taste. Serve it with steamed rice or roti.

Ingredients list for Palakwali Dal

  • 15-20 Spinach roughly shredded
  • ¾ cup Split green gram
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • a pinch Asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 2 medium Onions finely chopped

Method

  1. Boil moong dal with salt and turmeric powder in two cups of water.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai. Add asafoetida and cumin seeds. When cumin seeds start to change colour, add onions and green chillies. Sauté till onions are soft and translucent.
  3. Add ginger and garlic and saute for half a minute. Add dal and bring to a boil and add spinach and lemon juice. Simmer for two minutes.
  4. Serve hot.
