Tomato Pachadi

A very popular South Indian accompaniment of plum red tomatoes sautéed with mustard seeds and asafoetida, mixed with creamy yogurt.

Ingredients 

  • 2 small tomatoes
  • 3 dry red chillies
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon split black gram skinless (dhuli urad dal)
  • a pinch asafoetida
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. Wash and chop tomatoes. Remove stems and break whole red chillies into two. Heat oil and add mustard, urad dal, whole red chillies and asafoetida.
  2. Add chopped tomatoes and fry for about five minutes over a low heat. Set aside to cool. After it has cooled down, mix it well with yogurt and salt.
  3. Serve cold.
