Steamed Date Buns

Steamed Date Buns Recipe Card

Some say Chinese cuisine is 400,000 years old going back to the Peking Man and his use of fire. Some other accounts of the history of Chinese cuisine takes the beginning to the Chinese stone age. However today Chinese cuisine enjoys the distinction of being the most popular in the world.
All this furore about Chinese food can make one wonder what is so special about this cuisine.  To put it in one word it is wholesome.  It has the characteristics of being nutritious, economical, balanced and delicious. It cannot be gainsaid that Chinese food is popular the world over and it can be adapted into our modern lifestyles as the strong link between diet and health of body, mind and spirit is epitomized in Chinese cookery. We all desire harmony in our lives and this works on the ancient Taoist principle of Yin and Yang in which balance and contrast are the key. Each Chinese dish reflects a balance of taste, texture, aroma and colour. Be it sweet, sour, pungent, hot, salty or spicy – all the six basic flavours are incorporated deftly in all Chinese dishes.

Ingredients for Steamed Date Buns Recipe

  • Refined Flour 450 grams

  • Seedless Dates 3 teaspoon

  • Dry yeast 1 1/2 teaspoons

  • Milk 1/2 cup

  • Salt 1/4 teaspoon

  • Sesame oil (til oil) 1 teaspoon

  • Seedless dates finely chopped 125 grams

  • Walnut kernels roughly chopped 1/2 cup

  • Butter 1 tablespoon

  • Sweet bean paste 2 tablespoons

Step 1

Dissolve the sugar and dry yeast in lukewarm milk and leave aside for fifteen minutes or until frothy. Sieve the refined flour and salt together into a bowl, make a well in the center, add the yeast mixture and make a soft dough adding enough water.

Step 2

Add sesame oil and knead the dough with your palm and leave aside in a warm place for fifteen minutes or until it doubles in size. Knock out the air bubbles by kneading once again and divide into sixteen equal portions.

Step 3

Heat the butter in a pan and stir in the sweet bean paste diluted in two tablespoons of water. Add the dates and walnuts and cook for two minutes or till it starts leaving the sides of the pan.

Step 4

Remove from heat and cool. Roll each portion of the dough into two inch round discs, place a portion of the filling and gather the sides to form into a ball. Rest the prepared buns covered with a moist cloth for five minutes.

Step 5

Place them in a bamboo steamer and steam on high heat for fifteen minutes or until completely cooked. Serve hot straight from the steamer.
