Ingredients list for Steamed Date Buns

  • 450 grams Refined Flour
  • 3 teaspoon Seedless Dates
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil (til oil)
  • 125 grams Seedless dates finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup Walnut kernels roughly chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Sweet bean paste

Method

  1. Dissolve the sugar and dry yeast in lukewarm milk and leave aside for fifteen minutes or until frothy. Sieve the refined flour and salt together into a bowl, make a well in the center, add the yeast mixture and make a soft dough adding enough water.
  2. Add sesame oil and knead the dough with your palm and leave aside in a warm place for fifteen minutes or until it doubles in size. Knock out the air bubbles by kneading once again and divide into sixteen equal portions.
  3. Heat the butter in a pan and stir in the sweet bean paste diluted in two tablespoons of water. Add the dates and walnuts and cook for two minutes or till it starts leaving the sides of the pan.
  4. Remove from heat and cool. Roll each portion of the dough into two inch round discs, place a portion of the filling and gather the sides to form into a ball. Rest the prepared buns covered with a moist cloth for five minutes.
  5. Place them in a bamboo steamer and steam on high heat for fifteen minutes or until completely cooked. Serve hot straight from the steamer.
