Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Shalgam ka Halwa Recipe

  • Turnips peeled, grated and parboiled 4 medium

  • Ghee 2 tablespoons

  • Cashewnuts chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Almonds chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Pistachios chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Green cardamom powder 1/4 teaspoon

  • Few strands of saffron

  • Sorghum flour (bajre ka atta) 2 tablespoons

  • Grated jaggery 1 cup

Method

Step 1

Heat ghee in a non-stick kadai, add cashewnuts, almonds and pistachios and sauté for a minute.

Step 2

Add turnips and sauté for 3-4 minutes. Add green cardamom powder, saffron and sorghum flour and sauté for 3-4 minutes.

Step 3

Add jaggery and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring continuously, till all the jaggery dissolves.

Step 4

Transfer into a serving bowl and serve.
