A favourite with the vegetarians, paneer made from milk is quite common, especially paneer recipes are quite popular in the Indian subcontinent. You can make it fresh, chhena – an another version or just use the ones that are readily available in the market to prepare everything from simple snacks, curries, sabzis, mithais, desserts and the likes. An ingredient that can be relished in the raw form too – try serving it as a starter just sprinkled with a little chaat masala, black salt and chilli powder!

Ingredients for Paneer Toasties Recipe

  • Paneer (cottage cheese) Grated and mashed 100 grams

  • Bread slices toasted 4

  • Salt to taste

  • Black pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Small onions finely chopped 1

  • Tomato deseeded & chopped 1

  • Curry leaves chopped 2 tablespoons

  • Mustard seeds 1/4 teaspoon

  • Oil for shallow frying


Step 1

Mix salt, pepper powder, cottage cheese, onion, tomato and curry leaves in a bowl.

Step 2

Spread the mixture carefully on the toasted bread slices.

Step 3

Sprinkle some mustard seeds on the mixture, pressing down carefully with the finger tips.

Step 4

Heat oil in a non-stick pan, place the bread slices, one by one, cottage cheese side facing down and shallow fry, turning sides, till golden brown and crisp on both sides.

Step 5

Cut the slices diagonally and serve hot.
