How many times have we thought rice is a blessing? We use it for holy purposes but we also can pressure up a quick pulao or khichdi when hunger pangs are drumming away! This is one grain that is about 98% percent digestible. In India we are familiar with Basmati, Patna or brown rice but it is also available as Italian Rice and Glutinous Rice which is popular in Chinese and Japanese cuisines.

Ingredients for Thayar Satham Recipe

  • Rice 1 cup

  • Ghee 2 1/2 cups

  • Green chilli 1

  • Ginger 1/2 inch piece

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Ghee 1 tablespoon

  • Asafoetida a pinch

  • Yogurt 4 tablespoons

  • Bay leaves 2

  • Fresh coriander leaves a few sprigs

  • Salt to taste


Step 1

Bring the water to boil in a pan, meanwhile wash the rice thoroughly and drain. When the water starts to boil, add the rice and salt to taste.

Step 2

Cook for 10 –15 minutes or till the rice is done, drain off extra water if any. Put it back over the heat and cook for 3-5 minutes.

Step 3

Step 4

Add sliced chilli and grated ginger, sauté. Then gently add the yogurt and cook for few minutes.

Step 5

Pour this mixture over the cooked rice, stir gently. Garnish it with chopped coriander.
