How many times have we thought rice is a blessing? We use it for holy purposes but we also can pressure up a quick pulao or khichdi when hunger pangs are drumming away! This is one grain that is about 98% percent digestible. In India we are familiar with Basmati, Patna or brown rice but it is also available as Italian Rice and Glutinous Rice which is popular in Chinese and Japanese cuisines.

Ingredients for Green Gram Upma Recipe

  • Rice 1 cup

  • Split black gram skinless (dhuli urad dal) 1 teaspoon

  • Oil 3 tablespoons

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Whole green grams (sabut moong) 1 cup

  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Ginger chopped 1 inch

  • Green chillies slit 2

  • Curry leaves 10-12

  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Grind the rice and moong dal to a coarse powder.

Step 2

Heat two tablespoons oil in a deep non-stick pan. Add mustard seeds, urad dal and cumin seeds and saute for a minute.

Step 3

Add ginger, green chillies and curry leaves and saute for a minute.Add four cups water and bring it to boil. Add the rice and dal powder and keep stirring continuously.

Step 4

Cover and cook for ten to fifteen minutes. Add the remaining oil, cover and cook more for five minutes. Serve hot.
