Foreign invasions, trade relations and colonialism had introduced certain foods to the country like potato, chillies and breadfruit.

Ingredients for Paneer Chana Dal Recipe

  • Split Bengal gram 1 cup

  • Cottage cheese 200 grams

  • Ghee 2 tablespoons

  • Salt to taste

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Sugar 2 tablespoons

  • Lemon juice 1 tablespoon


  • Cinnamon 1 inch piece

  • Cloves 3

  • Black cardamoms 3

  • Black peppercorns 2-3

  • Bay leaf 1


Step 1

Roast all ingredients for dry masala and grind to a powder. Wash and soak chana dal for three to four hours.

Step 2

Cut paneer into half inch sized cubes. Heat ghee in a kadai and deep fry the paneer cubes till golden. Drain onto an absorbent paper.

Step 3

Heat two tablespoons ghee in a pan and add masala powder. After two minutes add the chana dal, salt, red chilli powder and turmeric powder.

Step 4

Add a little water and cook on medium heat. When the dal is cooked, add sugar and lemon juice and stir.

Step 5

Mix paneer pieces and serve warm.
