Ingredients list for Varan

  • 1 cup Split pigeon pea (toor dal/arhar dal) soaked for 1 hour
  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon Asafoetida
  • to taste Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Sugar


  1. Pressure cook the pigeon peas with turmeric powder, asafoetida and 3 cups water till 4 whistles are given out.
  2. Open the lid of the cooker once the pressure is completely released.
  3. Mash the peas with a mathni. Add salt and sugar and mix well. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Serve hot with steamed rice.
