Ingredients list for Dark Chocolate Sponge

  • 1 cup Refined flour (maida)
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1/4 cup Cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon Instant coffee powder
  • 1 cup Butter softened
  • 1 cup Castor sugar (caster sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla essence
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Milk


  1. Preheat oven to 180ºC. Grease a baking tin.
  2. Sift refined flour, baking powder and cocoa powder together into a bowl and set side.
  3. Mix coffee powder andone fourth cup waterin another bowl to make a decoction and set aside.
  4. Put butter and sugar in a large bowl beatwith an electric beater forone minute. Add vanilla essence and eggs one by one and beat till light and fluffy.
  5. Add flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture and fold in well. Add coffee decoction and mix well. Check the consistency of batter and add a little milk to get the required consistency.
  6. Pour the batter into the baking tin and bake in the preheated oven for thirty to thirty five minutes.
  7. Remove from the oven and transfer on a wire rack to cool.
  8. Use as required.
