Why is it that when you are stuck at “what should we cook today” the answer is always “make some aloo!” Potatoes are like this…extremely popular and have multipurpose usage.

And did you always think that eating a potato will make you fat?
Well, don’t – it is a surprising source of vitamin C and provides useful amounts of starch, thiamine and niacin and around a hundred grams will provide about eighty calories.

Ingredients for Shakarkand ki Tikki Recipe

  • Sweet potatoes boiled, peeled and mashed 4-5

  • Roasted peanuts powder ¼ cup

  • Rock salt (sendha namak) to taste

  • Ginger-green chilli paste 1 teaspoon

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Arrowroot powder 2-3 tablespoons

  • Ghee for shallow frying


  • Ripe banana 1

  • Sweet tamarind chutney 3-4 tablespoons


Step 1

Put mashed sweet potato in a bowl, add coriander leaves, rock salt, ginger-green chilli paste and peanut powder and mix well. Add arrowroot powder and mix well.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into tikkis.

Step 3

Heat some ghee on a non-stick tawa. Place the tikkis on it and shallow-fry, turning sides, till golden and crisp from both sides.

Step 4

To make chutney, peel banana and cut into small pieces. Transfer in a bowl, add sweet tamarind chutney and mix well.

Step 5

Serve hot tikkis with banana chutney.
