Ingredients list for Cholar Daler Murgi

  • 1 cup Split Bengal gram (chana dal) soaked in water for 3-4 hours
  • 750 grams Chicken breast cut into small pieces on the bone
  • 2 tablespoons Mustard oil filtered
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 2-3 large Onions finely chopped
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger paste
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Red chilli powder
  • 2 medium Tomatoes finely chopped
  • 4 Green chillies
  • 3 Raw mangoes chopped with skin
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Garam masala powder
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh coriander leaves chopped

Method

  1. Heat oil in non stick pan till smoking point. Lower heat and add coriander seeds, cumin seeds and onions and sauté till onions are well browned.
  2. Place chicken in a bowl, add salt, ginger paste, garlic paste, turmeric powder and 1 tsp red chilli powder and mix well. Add tomatoes to the pan, mix and sauté for 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add green chillies, chana dal and ¼ cup water. Mix well, cover and cook for 4-5 minutes. Add chicken, raw mangoes, salt, remaining red chilli powder, garam masala powder, coriander powder and 1 cup water. Mix well, cover and cook till chicken is soft. Garnish with coriander and serve hot.
