The Bengalis are great food lovers and take pride in their cuisine.  In fact so obsessed are they about food, that the man of the house goes to the market daily to buy a fresh supply vegetables and fish which is a must in their daily menu.  The medium of cooking is mustard oil which adds its own pungency.  Another very important item of Bengali cuisine is the variety of sweets or mishti as they call them.  Most of them are milk based and are prepared from chhena.
A meal, for the Bengali, is a ritual in itself.  Bengalis spend not only the great deal of time thinking about the food but also on its preparation and eating.

Ingredients for Cholar Daler Murgi Recipe

  • Split Bengal gram (chana dal) soaked in water for 3-4 hours 1 cup

  • Chicken breast cut into small pieces on the bone 750 grams

  • Mustard oil filtered 2 tablespoons

  • Coriander seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Onions finely chopped 2-3 large

  • Salt to taste

  • Ginger paste 1 tablespoon

  • Garlic paste 1 tablespoon

  • Turmeric powder 1 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1 1/2 teaspoons

  • Tomatoes finely chopped 2 medium

  • Green chillies 4

  • Raw mangoes chopped with skin 3

  • Garam masala powder 1 1/2 teaspoons

  • Coriander powder 1 teaspoon

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 2 tablespoons


Step 1

Heat oil in non stick pan till smoking point. Lower heat and add coriander seeds, cumin seeds and onions and sauté till onions are well browned.

Step 2

Place chicken in a bowl, add salt, ginger paste, garlic paste, turmeric powder and 1 tsp red chilli powder and mix well. Add tomatoes to the pan, mix and sauté for 3-4 minutes.

Step 3

Add green chillies, chana dal and ¼ cup water. Mix well, cover and cook for 4-5 minutes. Add chicken, raw mangoes, salt, remaining red chilli powder, garam masala powder, coriander powder and 1 cup water. Mix well, cover and cook till chicken is soft. Garnish with coriander and serve hot.
