  • 12 small green tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 medium apple
  • 1 inch stick cinnamon
  • 1 black cardamom
  • 2-3 black cardamom
  • 2-3 black peppercorns
  • 1 medium onions chopped
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • Salt to taste
  • ¾ cup cider vinegar
  • ½ cup sugar


  1. Peel, core and chop apple.
  2. Tie together cinnamon, black and green cardamoms and black peppercorns in a piece of muslin cloth to make a potli.
  3. Place tomatoes, apples, masala potli, onion and garlic in a heavy bottom saucepan. Add salt, half the vinegar and one cup of water and bring this mixture to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for twenty minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Remove the masala potli. Dissolve the sugar in remaining vinegar and add it to the mixture. Simmer, stirring, for twenty minutes
  5. Spoon the hot chutney into sterilized jars, cover and seal while hot.
