Simit Recipe Card


Turkish cuisine is largely based on Ottoman cuisine, which in turn borrowed many elements from Greek, Central Asian, Caucasian, Sephardi Jewish cuisine, Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisines. Turkish cuisine in turn influenced these as well as other cuisines of  neighbouring countries, including those of Central and Western Europe.

Ingredients for Simit Recipe

  • Refined flour (maida) 2 cups

  • Fresh yeast ½ teaspoon

  • Sugar ½ teaspoon

  • Olive oil 1 tablespoon + for greasing

  • Sea salt ½ teaspoon

  • Maple syrup 1 tablespoon

  • Sesame seeds (til) toasted for coating


Step 1

Pour one cup of warm water into a bowl. Add yeast, sugar and oil and whisk well.

Step 2

Add flour and salt, mix and knead into a soft dough. Grease a bowl with some olive oil, place the dough in it and set aside for one hour.

Step 3

Whisk together maple syrup with one tablespoon of water and set aside.

Step 4

Preheat oven to 200°C.

Step 5

Divide the dough into eight equal portions.

Step 6

Take a portion of the dough and start rolling with your hands into a thin long cylinder. Bring together the two ends and start twisting the dough. Gently stretch to make into a ring and seal the edges.

Step 7

Dip the simits in the diluted maple syrup and coat with sesame seeds. Place them on a baking tray and set aside for five to ten minutes.

Step 8

Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for twenty to twenty-five minutes. Remove from oven and cool.
