Tomato Saar

Tomato Saar is similar to Rasam, but then again, it is very different. Because of its soup like consistency, this makes for a good appetizer. But it can also be mixed with rice.

Ingredients

  • 5-6 tomatoes chopped, ripe and large
  • 1 cup scraped coconut
  • 6 garlic cloves 
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • a pinch asafoetida
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 3-4 green chillies, slit
  • 2-3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Method 

  1. Grind together the coconut, garlic and cumin seeds. 
  2. Take the tomatoes in a pan, add salt and red chilli powder and three cups of water and bring it to a boil.  Simmer for fifteen minutes and make a puree when it is a little cool.
  3. Heat the pure ghee in a pan and add the mustard seeds. As they begin to splutter, add the asafetida and curry leaves. Add the tomato puree and green chillies. Bring to a boil and add sugar and coconut paste.
  4. Cook on low heat for ten minutes. Adjust seasoning.
  5. Serve hot, garnished with the coriander leaves.
