Ingredients list for Mjadarah

  • 1 cup Masoor Dal rinsed
  • 1 cup Rice soaked and drained
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Black peppercorns
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin powder
  • 2 tablespoons Ghee
  • 4 medium Onions sliced

Method

  1. Put lentils in a deep pan, add three and a half cups of water and bring to the boil for a few seconds. Let them simmer for twenty minutes. Add salt, pepper, cumin powder and drained rice. Continue to simmer, covered, for twenty more minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the ghee in a separate pan. Fry onions till dark brown. Remove the onions with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the used ghee to the lentil mixture, stir gently and cook for five more minutes.
  3. Empty into a dish, cover with the fried onions. Serve hot or cold with salad or yogurt.
