Super healthy, cabbage goes a long way back. In ancient times, the Greeks treated it as a special food for its many medicinal properties. There are tales about raw cabbage juice being a standard treatment for a nasty hangover! Salads, dals, sabzis, pickles and even raitas, cabbage does full justice to each preparation. Shop for the ones that have a crisp, shiny look to it.

Ingredients for Cabbage Prawns Recipe

  • Cabbage finely chopped 1 medium

  • Prawns (medium) shelled and deveined 8-10

  • Salt to taste

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Oil 1 tablespoon

  • Garlic cloves crushed 8-10

  • Onions finely chopped 2

  • Sambhar masala 1 teaspoon

  • Red chilli powder 1 teaspoon

  • Fresh coconut grated 1/2 cup

  • Dried red chillies 2

  • Black peppercorns 4-5

  • Coriander seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Tamarind pulp 1 tablespoon

  • Coconut oil 1 tablespoon


Step 1

Marinate prawns with salt and turmeric powder and set aside.

Step 2

Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add garlic and sauté till well-browned.

Step 3

Add half the onions and sauté till it is translucent.

Step 4

Add cabbage, mix well and sauté for 1 minute. Add marinated prawns, mix well and cook for 1 minute.

Step 5

Add sambhar masala, red chilli powder, mix well, add a little water, stir to mix, cover and cook on low heat for 5 minutes.

Step 6

Combine 1 tablespoon chopped onion, coconut, red chillies, peppercorns and coriander seeds in a grinder jar. Add little water and grind into a fine paste.

Step 7

Add tamarind pulp in pan and mix well. Add ground masala, mix well, cover and cook for 2 minutes.

Step 8

To make tempering, heat coconut oil in a small non-stick pan. Add remaining onions and sauté till golden.

Step 9

Pour tempering over the prawn-cabbage mixture, cover and simmer for 1 minute.

Step 10

Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot.
